Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson ready to talk contracts

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Phil Parkinson has already been busy behind the scenes but the search for new players is about to intensify Phil Parkinson has already been busy behind the scenes but the search for new players is about to intensify

City are ready to step up their plans for next season’s team – and try to steal a march on those sides with pressing issues still to be decided.

With two games left and their position secure, Phil Parkinson can afford to concentrate on the summer rebuild that the fans are expecting.

Contracts and potential player targets will be top of the agenda at his routine meeting with the board this week.

With so many deals up in the dressing room, Parkinson has plenty to think about as he plots their second year back in League One.

James Hanson, Aaron Mclean and Andrew Davies are the only regular first-teamers currently still tied to the club beyond June.

Parkinson said: “We don’t want to take our focus away from Saturday and the last home game but now we are safe we can use these next few weeks wisely.

“We’ve got an advantage now over teams who are either in the play-offs or have things to play for. Those teams have got to be concentrating more on what they are doing at this moment.

“We found that last year. We’ve got to use that to our advantage.

“Although I’ve been focusing very much on the games, of course we’ve been watching players, speaking to agents over the last few months and checking out the availability of people for next season. That’s what we’ve got to do now.”

The bulk of the present squad were signed in 2012 – a recruitment process that was rewarded with one of the best seasons in City history.

The shortened break after Wembley 12 months ago saw far less movement and the players that did come in have all struggled to make their mark. Parkinson anticipates a more hectic period this time around – with some tough decisions to be made.

“Last year was a quiet summer because we had the core of players and wanted to go into the new season and give them a chance at this level. I felt they’d deserved that.

“We’ll sit back and assess everything. We want to finish the last two games in good spirits and then hopefully make sure we’re stronger next year.”

The club must concentrate on tying down new contracts for Stephen Darby & James Meredith to start with. I also think Carl McHugh should be kept on.

Not so sure about players like McArdle, Doyle though. Players I would definitely release are Thompson & Yeates. Of the loanees, Adam Reach would be a great permanent signing, I think him and Reid (when fit) on the wings would be good. Definitely need a couple of midfielders, central defender & Striker IMO.

Reach is out of our price range even if Boro were willing to sell (which is highly unlikely) best we can hope for is another extended loan. Reidy will no doubt want to sort somert closer to home ideally. Doyle has had a strong finish to the season and I don't see why you would want to break up the Davis Mccardle partnership which has been pretty solid.

Can 'Parky' risk playing some of our potential fringe players, on Saturday?. Crawley are safe, and not involved with any promo/relegation. issues. Although the Tranmere match may require a full first team selection.
*
I have been saying over the past few weeks, that it was time to move those players on , who are not deemed good enough for League 1
Time to bring in Players of L.1. ability ,with the potential of reaching promotion, to the Championship.
*
We know 'Parky' has that player assessment ability, already achieved. BUT , he will need money this Summer, to obtain the players he needs to continue City's progress.
*
I expect that money to be available from the sale of Wells, and from our joint chairmen???.

I agree the quality of recruitment is really going to be down to the directors. How much money and when it will be available, the sooner the better then PP will be judged on his recruitment this summer, if its as good as summer 2012 brilliant if its the same as summer 2013 we will be in trouble !

I don't think we'll be splashing the cash this summer Freddy. Freebies and loanees I imagine. The money from Wells has largely been swallowed up and I doubt very much that the chairmen will put any more money in. Not a criticism of them at all but I can't see them contributing towards a war chest.

My first target would be an experienced keeper to either be no.1 or push Jonny Mac because he's had no competition this season.
.
Oh and a central central midfielder who gets into the oppositions box and excites fans would be nice but considering Parky likes 2 holding midfielders and 2 wingers I aint holding my breath.

They do have some money but not millions to throw about. When they have put money in in the past it's been out of absolutely necessity in order for the club to survive. They don't have millions to stake on us getting promotion.

Overall. the back four and keeper have done well this season. I suppose it depends on what some of the players want too. The challenge is to bring in players who are are better, which can be difficult.

Most of the players have been good enough for L1. It's a fine line but it's true. You talk about fringe players which is missing the point. Managers want a squad of players who can step into the side. This is always problematic, because it means good players have to stay on the bench when they want to be playing.

Yes, and you would be the first to complain if one or both wingers were withdrawn. Jonny Mac has had a good season I believe. He is only 26 which is young for a keeper. Mark Schwarzer is 41 and he did not do badly last night. Possibly save some money by bringing in a loan keeper for cover as this season. You say bring in competition, but that means asking a first-team keeper to sit on the bench. Seeing as Jon is improving and has another 10 years (at least) in front of him, it seems daft to not to name him No.1.

Problem with last summers recruits is they were all ball playing midfielders/wingers.

I think it has been a good effort this season even though the majority (myself included) were over-optimistic at the start.

As I stated previously, next season could prove to be tougher than the current campaign. It is more difficult when not coming off the back of a promotion.

I sincerely hope that Reid or Reach (preferably both) are around next season. I would also like to see Meredith and Drury figuring as well. Can four 'lefties' be accommodated?

I am currently working in the Reading area. Speakng to Reading fans, it seems that Parky's playing style was that of a holding midfielder. Generally, he did not make forward passes. Instead, he won the ball and played it square. Hard as nails and loved by the fans.

With this in mind, I would not be surprised to see Nathan Doyle agreeing terms in the near future!

Not so sure about players like McArdle, Doyle though. Players I would definitely release are Thompson & Yeates. Assuming Carl McHugh is happy to spend another season on the bench. Perhaps he might think he can find first team football elsewhere. You have to consider the player.

Oh and a central central midfielder who gets into the oppositions box and excites fans would be nice but considering Parky likes 2 holding midfielders and 2 wingers I aint holding my breath.
I would not push Jonny Mac out of the club. He continues to gain experience and improve as a keeper. I believe he should be City's no.1 keeper.

I don't think the chairmen have any money - the only money we will have is what the club generates.
They do have some money but not millions to throw about. When they have put money in in the past it's been out of absolutely necessity in order for the club to survive. They don't have millions to stake on us getting promotion.
It also depends on season ticket sales.

I agree Carl McHugh is one of the best central defenders in this div and city should give him a contract and Parky should give him a run in the side with Davis. If Parky is going to use him as a bit part player then he should let him go.

Very true. I and suspect many other fans would be happy to pay an extra £50 for my season ticket if it means that the extra revenue is spent developing the squad.

I'd only be offering contracts to Jonny Mac, Darby, Meredith, McHugh and Reid. If Drury is available, I'd offer him a one year deal. Doyle disappoints me. He has the ability but seems to lose interest in the second half of the season. I wouldn't be fooled by a run of good form towards the end of each season.

I'd try and offload Yeates, Taylor, Kennedy and McLean.

That leaves a lot of recruiting to be done.....and that worries me!

I'm not sure why you have it in for him. He is a good GK who is still developing.
Off the top of my head I can't think of many instances this season where JM has been solely responsible for conceding a goal.
Also I imagine that he compares pretty favourably to most other GK's in this league in this regard.

Agreed. Perfectly adequate for us at the moment. I'd much rather we spent the money elsewhere and brought in a loanee if needed.

Correct!!!

Finding a replacement for Jonny Mac is the least of our requirements.

PP has a major rebuilding job and I don't envy him with the budget available. It's going to be a tough old season!

I don't normally comment on this site but some responses about our defence are starting to grate!
Firstly, obviously we need to sign Darby et al but we need to consider breadth of squad- where's the cover? There's much talk about McArdle - he's a right sided player so can play alongside Davies but also could cover for Darby if needed - so we need to renew Rory's contract.
McHugh is left sided so can't play alongside Davies - we've seen it once and it wasn't good. Keep McHugh as cover for the defence as there is no way Davies and Mezza will get through a complete season.
Johnny Mac is a good keeper learning all the time as he comes up through the leagues, playing better players week in week out. The club do need to sign an older pro as cover and support to JM.

We have struggled in part this season because we haven't had good squad cover so we need to strengthen that as well as re- signing our key players. I am not a fan of too loan players, personally i don't think it helps team morale. Everyone has to want to play for that shirt not just a paycheque.

I think Parky's priority has to be to sign up Darbs and Mez - both great at this level. For me he needs a goalkeeper to put pressure on Jonny Mac. His distribution for me is poor. I would also keep Carl McHugh and try to keep Reidy (for when he's fit) plus maybe get Reachy back on loan until Reidy is ready. Unfortunately Yeates has to go plus Tommo (we can do better) Matty Dolan will sign a deal at the end of his loan spell but not sure about Jonah, might be time for part time playing and join the coaching staff ? Taylor was a poor decision and he has to go as well.

I agree Carl McHugh is one of the best central defenders in this div and city should give him a contract and Parky should give him a run in the side with Davis. If Parky is going to use him as a bit part player then he should let him go.
I think the reason they haven't had Davies and McHugh together much is that Davies is a left sided centre back like McHugh. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it is.

To me we don't play to the strengths of players like Yeates, Kennedy or Di Vita.. To me one of them is a ball playing CM the other 2 are not traditional out and out wingers.. I think they would be much more suited in a team that plays a pressing possesion style game!! where they get the ball passed to them and cut inside and do quick one twos.. Could be totally wrong but looking at their history and roles in their previous teams this is my opinion

Do you think that putting "pressure" on someone is going to improve their performance? It does not always work that way.

I can't recall too many howlers but there is no denying there have been some uncertain moments.

For me, McLaughlin is a good 'keeper at this level. There is room for improvement in his decision making but I am sure that is a weakness that can be worked on.

A number of goals have been conceded this season through better quality (League One) opposition powering through the defensive area. For me, that is the main aspect that needs to be worked on. Unfortunately, McLaughlin has seen the ball drilled past him without a hope in hell of making a save.

Giving Jones a coaching role is all well and good but it could also mean one less player. Resources are finite.

Also, who is to say he would be any good in a coaching role?

Personally, I would love to see him around for years to come but common sense tells me it has to be the right decision for the club.

A new keeper is definitely required! Whilst J Mac has made the occasional good save this season his overall distribution is very poor. He doesn't command his area enough (does he have a voice?), never moves when he should be coming out to claim the ball and gets lucky free kicks given when he is challenged for the ball on corners. Then his kicking and knowing when to release the ball is very poor.

McLaughlin, Yeates, Bates, Taylor, Kennedy, DeVita, Dolan and Gray can all go for me. I'm still not 100% convinced about McArdle.

Darby, Meredith, Doyle I believe are musts! Despite not being highly consistent, I quite like Doyle and he plays a good role defensively. Thommo I would also keep on and I would offer Reid another year. Then maybe have Jones as more of a player/coach. I'd like to see them give Clarkson more of a run out and I only think McHugh will get better with more game time.

I think Drury is great back up for Meredith and it wouldn't surprise me if we look to try and get Stead signed up too. I think he has done well since his arrival. If we got Reach loaned out again that would be a great bit of business. Bennett needs to man up if he came back. The kid has ability, he just needs to put himself about more and have the confidence to take on/ cut inside!
