THIRTY young people raised £300 for a foodbank by washing cars outside Bradford City's Valley Parade stadium.

Drivers were charged £3 to have their vehicles washed in aid of Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank

It was organised by the youngsters as part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme, which was set up by the government to help people aged 16 to 18 years develop leadership and citizenship skills.

Kylie Lewis, an NCS co-ordinator, said: "It went really well. The young people come together to do the project and have to deliver an idea at the end of it that will benefit the community."

The youngsters, who took part in a residential trip to Scotland as part of the scheme, were from five schools across Bradford district.

Mrs Lewis added: "NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that builds skills and confidence, helps them get ahead in work and life and gives them a positive role in their local community.

"The programme includes an action-packed away residential, a skills-building residential, time finding out about the local community, designing and delivering a local community project and then enjoying a huge graduation party, with a certificate signed by the Prime Minister."
