A special tribute to a community stalwart takes place in Bradford on Friday.

Ravenscliffe Community Association is hosting a memorial event for John Rawnsley who died earlier this year at the of 80.

Known for his towering height, he was a director and past president of the association. And now a room is being dedicated to his memory at the Gateway Centre in Thackeray Road.

Janet McGill, volunteer co-ordinator at the centre, said: “We are inviting John’s family to the dedication of the John Rawnsley Room. We think it’s important for us to give something back to the family of this gentle giant who did so much for the community.”

Mr Rawnsley’s grandson, Guy Rawnsley, said the whole family will be at the centre for the occasion.

“It's a fantastic gesture by the Gateway Centre,” he said.

“And it is so good to know other people still think about my grandad even though he has gone.”

The event starts at 2pm.
