An Otley teenager has been elected to the UK Youth Parliament.

Fifteen-year-old Prince Henry’s Grammar School student Minhazul Abedin is one of three new members and two deputy members who will represent Leeds.

Fellow Prince Henry’s pupil Max Behrens, also 15, was among the runners-up.

Minhazul and the other successful candidates will hold regular meetings with local MPs and councillors, organise events, debates and campaigns, make speeches and try to ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision-makers.

Leeds City Council’s executive member for children’s services, Councillor Judith Blake (Lab, Middleton Park), said: “Being a member of the Youth Parliament is a great opportunity both in terms of representing the views of the young people of Leeds, as well as offering a chance for each young person to develop the skills for a successful future.”
