Dispute over Cock and Bottle pub site in Barkerend

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Cock and Bottle site Cock and Bottle site

Opinions are divided on the latest plans for the historic Cock and Bottle pub.

The debate hinges on whether the Grade II-listed pub in Barkerend Road, which has lain empty since February 2011, should be altered to allow it to re-open as a restaurant, even if this means losing some of its historic internal features.

Owner Aftab Ali, who wants to turn the building into a restaurant, has applied to remove the wall between the main bar and a snug, fit three new sash windows and a flue.

The matter is due to be discussed by the Bradford Area Planning Panel on Wednesday.

So far, 23 members of the public have written to planners to make their views known – and most of them are in favour of the redevelopment.

Eighteen people say they are in support of the scheme, arguing the landmark building is currently an eyesore and needs renovating.

But others object, saying the pub’s historic snug should be protected. Those objecting include English Heritage, the Victorian Society and the Campaign for Real Ale. Mr Ali has already been given planning permission to make alterations at the site, but heritage campaigners were unhappy with the decision and the matter is set to be considered by a judicial review.

This new application is designed to provide more detail and justify why the work is necessary, the planners’ report says.

Wasn't there a story last week, I think, about some Asians robbing some Polish people who were living in bedsits in the old pub.?
Were they living there with the owners consent, and if so, did he get permission for that?

Is Aftab Ali related to the QLM Bazzar fella by any chance, as both of them seem to think they are above the law when it comes to planning apps.?

Yet another tryer..
After it fails as a restaurant they can change it into a Asian bazaar. (Who needs planning permission)
It should remain a prestigious building keeping its traditional character, maybe a pub?

Yes he knew it was grade 2 listed, but he also knows this is Bradford. He know doubt thinks that he will be backed up by his cronies on the council. The interior of this Pub is remarkable. It should not be destroyed, to become yet another Asian food joint. How many more are we to lose?

I walked past the pub a month ago and was saddened to see the state it is in. Much of the original stained glass window has been replaced or altered and it is beginning to look like any other abandoned building. The mind boggles as to what it's like inside. For goodness sake, remove its listed status and let it go. The last time I went in for a drink it was a dump so I came straight back out sans drink. It's all very sad and I'm glad I experienced it at its best when it was run by Peter Fell and William Greenwood Brewery, but the area is infested with poverty and drug addiction. I wouldn't visit the place after dark even if it sold a dozen real ales. Camra are doing nobody any favours by clinging on to this building.

It is to his credit that he hasn't gone down cheats alley (the retrospective planning route), it is also to his credit that he intends to use the building, I hope a solution can be found that satisfies all concerned.

This is getting rediculous now !
too many of our heritage building are being destroyed by the aisian buisneses on the sly behind the backs of the so called council who refuse to take action , untill its too late !
Problem is that untill the council decides to take a look inside and see what damage is done , it will be too late to take any action against this deliberate damage to a listed building ! and by then they will decide to let it GO ahead .
Every old pub in bradford is now either a resturant or a Mosque ,
TIME TO CALL TIME !
and stop the rot Now !

The pub is next to the oldest building in Bradford and should remain to compliment each other...There are some comments regarding the planning and how planning is granted. Idle village is a classic example how many takes aways is there in such a small area. Tesco being granted planning in the car park of The George pub.. the junction from Apperley Bridge to Leeds Road is already a nightmare do we need another supermarket when there is ASDA Sainsburys and Morrisons so near and the effect it has on the small Asian shop near by...........The list is endless

The problem is people buy listed buildings, don't get planning permission, then let them fall into disrepair hoping the planners will approve anything in order to save a little.
Make them bring it back to the full listed status.

Buying and doing up listed buildings costs money..budget 3x the normal cost of renovation just to start, and be sympathetic.
Don't let chancers get away with it.

Hi I own this property and have been working with the council for the best part of a year to develop in a way which does not offend anybody and everybody can appreciate. I have not removed or altered anything material and the council officers will confirm this. In fact I have spent nearly 5000 pounds and commissioned West Yorkshire Archaeology Services to carry out a thorough and comprehensive archaeological and architectural recording. And just for the record I am not planning to open an Indian restaurant nor am I Asian. I am Omani and if plans approved the building will be let to a close friend who runs Lebanese restaurants or converted to a coffee shop. Can all the CAMRA people on here please get a grip.

Due too the council having a large majority of Ethnic council members I think the problem will continue. The corner shop takeaway mentality will continue to thrive in once respected areas of this City. It would be nice to have our City back before it becomes a annex of Asia.

Does this mean your not sure what you will do with this historic English pub. I'm sure it will be packed with Lebanese client every night of the week.
How many restaurants do you think this City can hold?
I'm sure you have the best intentions but enough's enough. ( very similar to private hire companies - overkill )

I've said it before on previous stories re this pub interior.

CAMRA, English Heritage should club together, have the unique and historic interior stripped, rebuilt in one of the terrace houses in the grounds of the Industrial Museum. Let's face it, when the mills were in full flow is when this public house would have been busiest and a hub of the community (for the men anyways). It makes sense to have a glimpse of a public house as well as the terraced houses and the Victorian house all within the same space.

Everyone wins, the owner can continue to develop, the interior is retrained for future generations and we don't have t have ignorant comments about too many this or too many that.
