A Bradford man was snared by DNA found on a drinks bottle after fleeing police at speeds of 100mph in a stolen car, a court heard.

Philip Halliday, 30, was jailed for 12 months at Bradford Crown Court yesterday after he admitted driving dangerously during a high-speed police chase at 3am on December 5.

Camille Morland, prosecuting, said officers tried to stop Halliday after the Ford Focus ST he was driving almost collided with their vehicle on Holroyd Hill.

They followed him as he drove around the estate at speeds of between 60mph and 100mph, but later lost him. The court heard the vehicle was recovered and Halliday was identified by DNA left on a drink bottle inside the car.

He admitted dangerous driving, but pleaded not guilty to an offence of aggravated vehicle taking. His pleas were accepted.

Halliday’s solicitor advocate Simon Hustler said failing to stop for the police was a “massive error on his part”. He added: “There is no excuse, but it was the middle of the night and the roads were deserted.”

The Recorder of Bradford Judge Roger Thomas QC said the car was taken during a burglary in October.

He added: “How that vehicle came into your possession is far from clear.”

Halliday, of Smith Avenue, Odsal, was jailed for 12 months for dangerous driving and ordered to pay a £100 surcharge. He was banned from driving for 12 months and must take an extended re-test before driving again.
