Marriott Hollins Hall Golf Club

Quality course with luxury hotel and leisure club

The Marriott Hotel group opened Hollins Hall golf course in May 1999, and it follows the familiar Marriott pattern of a luxurious hotel combined with a top quality golf course.

Farmland was re-sculptured and USGA specification tees and greens built to provide a majestic course with some big and very tricky greens.

Mark James, former Ryder Cup captain, opened the course and was full of praise for this course on his doorstep. It has hosted four PGA Euro Tour events and is confident that more will follow.

The designer was Ross McMurray, who followed his signature feature of making the 17th driveable – providing you hit it just right. In Hollins Hall’s case, a steep fall to the green can take your drive there, but there is trouble right and left so most lay up short.

The signature hole is the 14th, nestling under a railway viaduct with a pond and stream to test driving ability.

As well as a high quality golf course, there is a leisure club with gym, sauna, steam rooms and indoor swimming pool, for which you pay a little extra on the membership.

Marriotts depend heavily on corporate golf, but Saturday mornings and most Sunday morning tee times are reserved for members, who at other times can book a start up to ten days in advance.

It’s an arrangement that works well – and members also have complimentary access to 14 other Marriott courses in the UK.
