Big plans in pipeline for centenary celebrations

Next year promises to be a big one for Elland Golf Club as the members celebrate their centenary.

The first of four celebrations kick off in January with a dinner dance, where the members all plan to dress up in Edwardian gear.

Another big social event will follow in July to mark 100 years to the day from the first ball being struck.

A stone plaque will be inserted on the first tee and the club also aims to have something out on the course – but ideas are still being filtered before a final decision is made.

And there’s a host of golfing events and new competitions for this tricky nine-holer.

The Elland committee prides itself on the quality of the greens – fast, undulating and with a perfect roll, you need a delicate touch.

The rest of the course has been tightened up, with fairways brought in a few yards this year to make things a little tougher. And there’s plenty of trees awkwardly positioned to ensure it’s not a question of brute force playing round.

Although there is no room to expand, there are 18 different tees for variety and this ensures that Elland is one of the more popular nine-holers around – its male membership list is full, no mean feat in this era.

The current single-storey clubhouse, pictured, was built in the 1970s and the ladies’ changing rooms have recently been refurbished.

There is an unusual deal for the club’s many social members – their fee of £72 includes six rounds of golf round the course.
