FURTHER restrictions have come into place on a road that runs through the heart of Bradford city centre.

Motorists arriving in central Bradford were greeted by new signs and further closures on Monday as the next phase of the major roadworks project began.

It means Hall Ings - for many years a crucial artery into the centre of the city - is now partially closed to vehicle traffic.

The closure will prevent westbound general traffic travelling along Hall Ings between the junction of Drake Street and Jacobs Well.

Eastbound traffic, coming off Jacobs Well and heading in the direction of the Broadway with the NCP car park on your right, is still able to use Hall Ings temporarily, ahead of the planned full closure of Hall Ings to all vehicles to create the space for the expanded pedestrianised Norfolk Gardens.

Motorists approaching from the direction of the job centre and Eastbroook Hall can still turn right into the Broadway car park.

However, shortly after that turn-off, drivers come across barriers blocking off the stretch of Hall Ings that runs between Drake Street and Bridge Street.

On Monday, it meant vehicles were lining up to turn right near Argus Chambers into the bottom of Bank Street.

Further along Hall Ings, near the Azuma eat as much as you can buffet, a bright yellow sign has been put in place warning general traffic heading towards Jacobs Well that they are entering a stretch of road that is a 'bus gate' - for buses and construction traffic only.

That means any general traffic travelling along Hall Ings, with the former NCP car park on the left, should not be doing so. This will be "camera-enforced" - the Council has warned.

The works have created some detours for pedestrians, with numerous footpaths closed and barriers in place.

Meanwhile, access is being maintained from Shipley Airedale Road into Little Germany and the Leisure Exchange area.

According to the Council, Bank Street and Broadway are open to buses, taxis, and local resident and business access only.

Drake Street is open to buses, taxis and local access in one direction only from Hall Ings to the Law Courts access road.

Westbound through traffic that would normally have used Hall Ings will move to its new permanent route via Shipley Airedale Road, Croft Street and on to Manchester Road/Princes Way.

Lots of work is continuing on Well Street, which runs across the back of the Broadway along the fringe of Little Germany, with lots of machinery on site and numerous barriers restricting access for pedestrians.
