LATEST NEWS: Police update after man suffers serious injuries in Leeds Road crash

A MAN has spoken of his shock after he witnessed a pedestrian sustain serious injuries following a crash on a major Bradford road.

A large section of Leeds Road was closed for most of Saturday afternoon due to the collision just after 1pm, near the junction with Seymour Street.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

West Yorkshire Police say it was reported that the vehicle failed to stop after the crash.

Michal Kaniowski witnessed the incident and offered his help to the pedestrian.

The 41-year-old said: "I was the first at the scene assisting the pedestrian who was hit.

"My first reaction was hearing a crash, like a collision. I was shocked but quickly ran across the street to help.

"In such moments, rational thinking shuts down, and the instinct to act kicks in to quickly assess injuries and figure out how to help.

"My priority was to assess any injuries and provide first aid until the arrival of emergency services.

"A woman, who witnessed the incident, appeared and helped me too.

"A few minutes later, the police arrived, followed by paramedics, and then the ambulance."

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: PoliceRoad closures were in place between Seymour Street and Birksland Street on Leeds Road.

The 608, 72, and X6 First Bus services which usually run on the road, connecting Leeds and Bradford, were diverted. 

At the time, a spokesperson from the bus company said: "There is an incident on Leeds Road. 

"Services will divert via Back Lane in both directions until further notice."

At 4pm on Sunday, the Telegraph & Argus approached West Yorkshire Police for a comment but they were unable to provide an update.

Yesterday afternoon, a spokesperson for the force said: "At 1.20pm, police received a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and vehicle on Leeds Road, Bradford.

"Officers attended and the man was treated at the scene for serious injuries before being taken to hospital.

"It was reported that the vehicle involved had failed to stop following the collision which is said to have occurred near the junction with Seymour Street.

"Road closures are currently in place on Leeds Road between Seymour Street and Birksland Street.

"Enquiries into this incident continue.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

"Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact police on 101."
