A live music venue with a heritage dating back to 1884 has won a leisure award two years after a major relaunch.

Tickles Music Hall has become Leisure Venue of the Year 2023 in the Telegraph and Argus Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Awards.

The category was sponsored by Bradford at Night.

The premises, on Westgate, was formerly the Tavern in Town pub.

The original Tickles Music Hall was opened in 1982, in the style of an old Victorian music hall.

And now Tickles has been enjoying a new lease of life as a live music venue after the iconic building underwent a major refurbishment and reopened in 2021.

Events Manager Ellen Boyle said: “We were very happy to receive the award. We were in a category with a couple of very strong contenders so we were very surprised.

“It’s amazing being nominated and to win was the icing on the cake. We have worked very hard to establish Tickles as a live music venue that is of value to the community. Winning has confirmed that all our efforts have been recognized.

“Our Vintage Tuesday Afternoons put us on the map initially as we cater to a more mature crowd. It’s all about the 50s, 60s and 70s, Live entertainment and a DJ who compliments the afternoon playing great music from those decades.

“Saturday nights we bring bands from across the UK and beyond. People expect a great Saturday night out and we give it to them.

“We have just had a marvellous weekend which featured Manchester Ska Foundation and a superb Sunday afternoon where we featured 2 glorious 1940 and 50s acts to entertain the people who enjoy our Special Sunday Themed Events. Yesterday was Remembrance Sunday. Our venue was filled with swing dancers and veterans.”
