These are the lowest-rated care homes in the Bradford district, according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The independent regulator of health and social care inspects and regulates care homes, dentists, GP practices, hospitals, mental health services and much more.

In the latest list for Bradford district, the CQC ranked:

  • 7 care homes 'Outstanding'
  • 126 care homes 'Good'
  • 52 care homes 'Requires Improvement'
  •  7 care homes 'Inadequate'

'Inadequate' care homes in Bradford

1. Morton Close, East Morton

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Latest report: January 18, 2023

A damning report into Morton Close, East Morton, laid bare a catalogue of concerns and problems.

Following the focused inspection, the home was rated ‘inadequate’ overall and for the inspection areas relating to safety, leadership and how caring it was.

Morton Close is run by ADL Plc, which runs 21 care homes across the country.

Chairman Jeremy Davis said last month: "We take this report very seriously and we are taking steps to rectify things as well as we can."

The CQC says it is carrying out a review of quality at this service. It will publish a report when the review is complete.

2. Valley View Court, Keighley

Latest report: January 6, 2023

The care home was handed an overall ‘inadequate’ rating at its last CQC inspection.

The home was also rated ‘inadequate’ for safety and leadership as well as ‘requires improvement’ fo responsiveness, effectiveness and the inspection question, ‘is the service caring?’.

Last month, a spokesperson for the care home said staff were already "confident that the [new] measures implemented" will lead to an improved rating. 

The CQC says it is carrying out a review of quality at this service. It will publish a report when the review is complete.

3. Laurel Mount Nursing Home, Keighley

This service received an overall 'inadequate' rating in its last CQC inspection.

The CQC also handed out an 'inadequate' rating for safety, effectiveness, responsiveness and leadership. 

The service was rated 'requires improvement' for the inspection question, 'Is the service caring?'. 

The CQC says it is carrying out a review of quality at this service. It will publish a report when the review is complete.

At the time, Dr Baby Cherian, care company director, said they were working with the CQC and Bradford Council to rectify things and move forward.

4. Handsale Limited - Bierley Court

Latest report: January 26, 2023

The watchdog rated Bierley Court on Bierley Lane, Bierley, 'inadequate' in its last inspection. 

The CQC handed out an overall 'inadequate' rating.

Inspectors ranked the service 'inadequate' for safety, effectiveness, responsiveness, and leadership. 

Bierley Court was also rated 'requires improvement' for the inspection question, 'Is the service caring?'.

Last month, a spokesperson for Handsale Limited said they were disappointed with the findings.

They claimed the report contained inaccuracies and a formal process to challenge those is underway.

The CQC says it is carrying out a review of quality at this service. It will publish a report when the review is complete.

5. Wykewood, Wyke

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Wykewood, Huddersfield Road, Wyke, will provide care for adults with complex needs

Latest report: November 4, 2022

A report from the Care Quality Commission said the visit to Wykewood was “prompted in part by notification of an incident during which a person using the service died”.

It was given an overall ‘inadequate’ rating by inspectors.

Wykewood, on Huddersfield Road, was also rated ‘inadequate’ for safety and leadership, ‘requires improvement’ for effectiveness and responsiveness and ‘good’ for the inspection question  ‘is the service caring?’.

Selina Wall, managing director for Wykewood, said at the time of the report: “Our residents’ safety and wellbeing is our main priority.

“We take the CQC’s findings very seriously and have already made a number of improvements to address the specific concerns highlighted in CQC’s report."

6. Ashcroft Nursing Home, Cleckheaton

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Latest report: November 9, 2022

The care home was handed an overall ‘inadequate’ rating by inspectors. 

The home was also rated ‘inadequate’ for safety, leadership and responsiveness as well as ‘requires improvement’ for effectiveness and the inspection question, ‘is the service caring?’.

It marked a drop from the home’s previous ‘good’ rating.

But a spokesman for the care home said in November it was taking the report’s findings “extremely seriously”.

The CQC says it is carrying out a review of quality at this service. It will publish a report when the review is complete.

7. Duchess Gardens Care Centre, Bingley

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Latest report: May 17, 2022

This service received an overall 'inadequate' rating following the CQC's latest inspection.

It was also rated 'inadequate' for safety, leadership, and the inspection question, 'Is the service caring?'.

Duchess Gardens Care Centre was rated 'good' for effectiveness and 'requires improvement' for leadership.

The CQC says it is still carrying out a review of quality at Duchess Gardens Care Centre. It will publish a report when the review is complete. 

Bradford Council said it had been made aware of Qualia Care’s decision to cease operating services in June 2022.

The Telegraph & Argus understands the service has since closed.
