COUNCILLORS and residents have reacted with sadness following a huge crash which left a woman fighting for her life and a man in hospital.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road and Halifax Road, Shelf, at 11.08am on Monday, January 9.

It followed a collision between two cars which the Telegraph & Argus understands to have been a Ford Fiesta and Toyota Prius.

A man from one of the cars was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, a woman from the other car was also taken to hospital, having suffered life-threatening injuries.

Road closures and a large police scene remained in place for most of the day.

"I also pray for good news of their respective recoveries in the very near future.

"I shall await the police STATS19 report and shall be requesting to see it as soon as it is available."

Cllr Martin John Hey thanked the emergency services and the community's role in dealing with the incident.

He said: "This was a very serious incident that I know will have really upset everyone in the Northowram and Shelf area.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service were also in attendance.

The A6036 at Shelf, close to the Halifax Road and Hud Hill roundabout, Spring Hall Close and Denholme Gate Road were all shut.

The T&A attended the scene and spoke to residents.  Vehicles were not allowed up the road but it seemed as though pedestrians were.

One woman, who lives close by, said: "It is very upsetting to see what has happened."

The roundabout links Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road and Halifax Road, and saw the former blocked off by a police car.
