A NEW double-sized Poundland has opened in Bradford and The Telegraph & Argus has visited for an early look.

The Poundland store, in Bradford Forster Square Retail Park, officially launched on Saturday at 9am.

It fills the spot of One Below – another discount brand which closed its doors in August after less than three years of trading.

The new shop is twice the size of normal Poundland stores, at more 12,000 square feet.

It has also created 20 new jobs – for full and part-time colleagues.

There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony just before opening on Saturday with a yellow and blue balloons either side of the entrance and exit, and dog mascot, clad in Poundland attire, on hand to welcome people into the store.

Chris Field, manager at the store, said: “I’m really glad to be open, it’s been a massive effort to get it together this week.

“But we’re really chuffed to have another Poundland in Bradford.”

The layout of the store is similar to One Below but feels much more spacious, with wide aisles for people to peruse.

Mr Field said: “There’s been quite a lot of building of work and we’ve just had a week to put it together ourselves.

“So yes, it’s been a big pressure week to be ready for today.”

A large area at the back of the shop is dedicated to Poundland’s range of PEP&CO clothing.

This range included everyday clothing items, as well as more seasonal offerings, such as Christmas onesies and pyjamas, when the T&A visited on Saturday.

Mr Field said: “It’s just more choice for our customers.

“We like to compete in the discount markets and the discount clothing is great value for customers as well.”

The Poundland store will have the usual everyday essentials , such as groceries, drinks and snacks, as well as a revamped health and beauty, entertainment, stationary and craft ranges.

But it also joins the growing number of locations, set to pass 350 this year, to sell chilled and frozen food, powered by Fultons.

Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “Yorkshire is one of Poundland’s heartland regions and we’re delighted to have found another great location in Bradford Forster Square.

“The new store has been designed to show off Poundland at its best and like all our stores it will offer amazing value to help our customers as their household budgets feel the squeeze.”

It is now the fourth Poundland store in Bradford.
