The One Below store in Bradford’s Forster Square Retail Park has closed its doors after less than three years of trading.

Once dubbed the UK's "biggest pound store", the popular value chain came to the city in October 2019.

From household essentials to seasonal decorations, shelves were stocked with thousands of products costing £1 or less.

But now the store unit has been vacated and just a pair of ladders remains inside.

It follows the store’s 50 per cent off closing down sale.

The Telegraph & Argus understands a number of jobs have been affected.

One Below has been contacted for comment.

Poundworld founder Chris Edwards announced plans to open the stores in early 2019.

After opening the first branch in Leeds, the chain boss revealed plans to open stores in Bradford, Wakefield, Glasgow, Irvine and two in London.

The CEO planned to open four stores a week, it was reported at the time, with 100 shops trading by the end of the year.

Most of the stores were due to open in old Poundworld shops - sites that Mr Edwards used to control before he sold the bargain chain for £150million in 2015.

He said: "We've had a good response from landlords we've dealt with historically.

"We're lining shops up and most of them are going to be Poundworld sites."

The roll-out also saw the creation of a warehouse operation in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

New Poundland store in Bradford

Meanwhile, Poundland has confirmed it will be opening a store in the same unit.

In a planning application to Bradford Council, the company has requested approval to change the One Below signage to its Poundland branding.

A spokesperson said: “Bradford is a great location for Poundland and we’re looking forward to opening a new store at Bradford Forster Square Retail Park later in the year.

“We’re putting together a store the city can be proud of, with more of what customers need and at the amazing value we’re famous for – including PEP&CO clothing and homeware.

“As soon as we’ve got more details to share we’ll be in touch.”
