Police have cordoned off part of North Bierley Cemetery following a serious incident in the early hours.

An attack took place near Abb Scott Lane, Low Moor, around midnight on July 22, 2022.

A 49-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

One resident nearby told how he discovered the man "bleeding badly from a wound on his leg" in a garden.

'Come on, help me'

The resident told the Telegraph & Argus: “I woke up just after 12 and I could hear somebody shouting, 'Help, help, come on, help me'.

"I looked out of the bedroom window and I could see someone climbing over the wall into the cemetery.

"My son said 'some of the neighbours are going out, what's happening?'

"When we got over the side of the wall we couldn't see him. We were hunting all over for him, we were looking all the way over the cemetery.

"My son found him in a nearby garden.

"He was in a bad way when we found him, bleeding badly from a wound on his leg.

“The police were out very quickly and called for an ambulance, who arrived very quickly. The police were giving first aid.

“Two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance turned up. Police have been in the cemetery all night and are still there.”

He added: "I thought it must have been serious with the police cordon. They stopped there all night."

The streets surrounding the cemetery and nearby park are usually quiet and peaceful, the resident said.

"It's not something we expect round here," he said.

"It's quite a quiet area."
