Primary school children in Otley have revealed dreams of becoming barristers and engineers after ‘Anyone Can Day’.
Westgate Primary School introduced pupils to possible future careers as surgeons, engineers, tailors, personal trainers, construction workers, police officers, ballet dancers, pilots, clinical pharmacists, airport security guards and more.
Head teacher Helen Carpenter said: “Anyone Can Day was a fun, exciting, hands on day which raised children’s aspirations, challenged gender stereotypes and made links between the subjects they are studying to possible future careers.”
In a special assembly, children guessed the occupation of three plain clothes volunteers with several ‘yes or no’ questions.
The end of the ‘Who am I?’ game saw the trio return wearing their uniforms with props as clues.
Back in the classroom, pupils learnt about 19 jobs.
Year two pupil Felicity said: "I liked the engineer, because it looked like fun building stuff."
Her peer Anaïs said: "I liked the barrister because I like reading, and to be a barrister you need to read a big book of laws.”
Year six student Elliott added: "I didn't realise that some of these jobs actually existed.”
Surgeon Nasira said: “I was particularly impressed with the discussion involving the students, raising awareness, and quashing any anxieties about stereotypes.”
