A new group has been set up for Bradford women who dream of transforming their neighbourhood while keeping fit.

Heaton runner Sahar Ijaz is behind Together We Are, a running club with a difference.

From cycling and litter picking, the group meets every Saturday in Lister Park for the Couch to 5K challenge, running-based games and community-oriented activities.

The group aims to support women and girls, also breaking down barriers preventing girls of ethnic minority backgrounds from exercising.

It has since received funding from England Athletics, used to buy modest fitness clothing, equipment and offer running qualifications.

Sahar said: “I started running myself in 2020 during lockdown using the Couch to 5k programme, after losing my job and having nothing to focus on.

“I love this group because it is something I so desperately wanted and needed when I was at the start of my journey.

“We don’t just run. Together we build confidence, friendships and break everyday stigmas.

“Joining other running groups in the past felt nerve-wracking because I felt there was an expectation to already be a good and confident runner.

“What makes this group special is that you can join with absolutely no experience.”
