PLANS to turn a vacant city site into a new Volvo dealership have been approved.

Clive Brook had submitted an application to rebrand and refurbish the former Jaguar Dealership building on Canal Road.

It said the changes "would allow the Volvo brand and Clive Brook Ltd to consolidate their presence on a prominent plot in the city.

"The site is an ideal location to achieve their marketing and business objectives, providing suitable exposure in terms of passing traffic and visibility to potential customers.

"The proposed extensions will not only make it possible for the business to accommodate current brand requirements, they effectively future proof the business by increasing workshop and sales capacity.

"The resulting high quality motor retail environment will retain local employment and reinforce the applicant's commitment as a major contributor to the local economy, whilst respecting the needs of the local community within the immediate vicinity of the site."

Among the changes to the site will be the addition of 13 electric vehicle charging points.

Approving the scheme, planning officers said the changes "will provide employment opportunities and support future sustainable transport."
