PLANS to turn a former petrol filling station into an electric car charging station have re-emerged.

The Bowling Bridge filling station on Wakefield Road would be demolished under the new plans by the MFG Motor Fuel Group.

In its place an EV charging station for 10 cars would be built, along with a shop and car wash facilities.

A similar application was refused by Bradford Council earlier this year after Yorkshire Water raised concerns that layout would prevent access to a sewer that passes under the site.

The plans were re-designed, and a new application has now been submitted to Bradford Council.

The application says the development will help meet the need created by the “increasing number of electric vehicles on the road.”

It says this and similar facilities will be needed if the Government is to follow up on its pledge to gradually phase out diesel and petrol vehicles in the coming years.

Liz Bates, Pollution Control Officer on Bradford Council has supported the plans, saying: “Bradford has been mandated by the Government to reduce nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the city and is developing a Clean Air Plan to achieve this.

“Widespread transition to electric vehicles across Bradford is a key part of this plan.

“This proposal will be a valuable addition to the current rapid recharging infrastructure available in the district and will help to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.”

A decision on the application is due next month.
