PLANS to fully restore a former landfill site - including creating new areas of grazing land and public woodland, have been approved.

Last year Bradford Council agreed to spend almost £2 million to “cap” the Sugden End Landfill on Halifax Road in Cross Roads - between Haworth and Keighley.

And now a full planning application for these works, including how the landfill gasses will be controlled, has been approved.

Environmental health officers said: “The proposed capping and restoration works will enable more effective control and management of landfill gas.”

Warehouse that had been gutted by fire can be refurbished after new plans approved

Now the plans have been approved, work to restore the 10 hectare site, is due to start in the coming weeks, and last for 30 months.

When complete, the site will be home to an oak upland woodland, moorland area, wildflower meadows, rock pile areas and additional agricultural grazing land.

The Sugden End household waste recycling centre at the same site will not be affected by the plans.

The land was used as a landfill for 34 years, from 1964 to 1998. Since then gas has been burned off and other measures taken to control any byproducts of the years of waste dumping.
