FINANCE Secretary John Swinney was today leading talks scrutinising plans by whisky company Diageo to cut 900 jobs in Scotland.
The talks were focusing on an independent report into the proposals to cut about 700 jobs at the Johnnie Walker bottling plant in Kilmarnock and 200 at Port Dundas in Glasgow.
Diageo said it would offset the cuts with 400 new jobs at its Fife packaging plant.
The report, compiled by business development firm BDO Stoy Hayward, also seeks alternative solutions as part of the campaign to save jobs.
Today's talks were at ministerial headquarters in Edinburgh and brought together the Scottish Government, unions, East Ayrshire and Glasgow councils and local MSPs.
Mr Swinney said: "This meeting is a crucial step forward and demonstrates the substantial case against Diageo's proposed job cuts in Scotland is gaining real momentum."
