APPRENTICE David McCabe was banned from September 3 to 23 inclusive at

a Jockey Club inquiry yesterday.

The disciplinary committee inquired whether or not McCabe, riding

Ozzie Jones, had intentionally caused interference in the Phil Bull

Trophy at Pontefract on August 23.

After having considered evidence from McCabe, his employer David

Loder, and Richard Quinn, the jockey on Bardolph, the committee found

that McCabe had ''purposely and persistently interfered with Bardolph

after the three-furlong marker.''

The committee also confirmed the disqualification of Ozzie Jones.

It was McCabe's third riding offence of the season but Jockey Club

spokesman David Pipe said: ''The committee treat each incident on its

merits, and clearly took the view that this was a serious case.''

Michael Caulfield, the Jockeys' Association secretary, said: ''It does

seem to me a very stiff penalty.''

''David can take the case to the disciplinary review body if he feels

there has been an injustice.

''It's up to the trainer and jockey to decide whether they want to

take it any further.''
