DRIVERS on the M62 were forced to drive through thick smoke after a large pile of fly-tipped waste in a field was set on fire.

Fire crews from Bradford and Cleckheaton put out the burning waste at around 8.30 this evening on land off Hunsworth Lane at East Bierley, Bradford.

The land was said to be a farmer's field near to the motorway bridge.

A fire service spokesman said that vehicles were forced to slow down due to the amount of smoke drifting across the motorway.
