25 Years Ago: An ancient banknote issued by a Bradford forerunner of Barclays Bank had gone under the hammer. The note, issued on October 9, 1817, was printed in black ink on white paper and featured a coat of arms within a floral wreath.

50 Years Ago: W.H. Smith, one of Britain’s biggest newspaper distributors, had announced they would be handling “Paris Match,” a French magazine which contained pictures of the Queen in Bed. According to the director Mr. G. W. Rowe, Smith’s would not be ordering any extra copies.
