Lee Greenwood, born and bred in Bradford but currently living and working in Belgium, sent in copies of these two photographs (above and below). The man is believed to be Thomas Armstrong, Mr Greenwood’s maternal great-grandfather, born in 1876 in Bradford to Irish parents, who served in the military in 1899 and 1914.

He writes: “He lived in Globe Fold and Ludlow Street. I think he lived his life around the White Abbey area. He married twice, Mary Ann Tidall in 1895 and, on her death in 1917, Mary Alice Flanagan (nee Brennan).

“Also in the family are Porrellis, Sutcliffes and Greenwoods. Maria Johanna Porrelli died in the workhouse after suffering from peritonitis caused by a botched ‘back street’ termination.

“I was wondering if the lady is either of Thomas’s wives or someone in mourning. I do not know the date of the photograph. If any of your readers can shed light on this dilemma, I would be most grateful.”

The two photographs were among the items found among numerous pictures of family and friends in the possession of Mr Greenwood’s mother, who lived in Girlington until her death. The woman’s photo is 25cm by 15 cm and is on thick card. Around her neck she is wearing a pendant which bears the portrait of a female, possibly herself at a younger age, or somebody close to her.
