Responding to a recent item about the time-machine qualities of parish magazines, John Taylor dipped into his copy of the St Peter's Messenger (Allerton) from December, 1963.

In it he found an advert for Seabrook potato crisps which in those days came in only three flavours (Natural, Cheese and Tomato, and Cheese and Onion).

There was an advert for a shop at 283 Allerton Road called "Gaywear", which today might mean something rather different to the sort of cheerful clothing for children that was on sale there at that time.

Another St Peter's Messenger in his possession, from March, 1966, includes an advert for R&E Wright's paper shop at 272 Allerton Road, which is now long gone along with Sara clothing shop at 147 Allerton Road.

They live on, though, in the pages of parish magazines and the memories or local people, though not in the memory of John Taylor, who admits that he hadn't even been born then!
