Yorkshire Observer, Tuesday, 8 May 1945:
It was victory at last, as the European war had officially ended. An announcement was due to be made in the House of Commons at 3 o’clock and broadcast simultaneously in London, Moscow and Washington. The King was to broadcast to the people of the British Empire and Commonwealth at 9 o’clock and President Truman to the United States at 1pm. While the calm of peace spread over Europe, German S.S. men in Prague, abandoned all normal conduct and in lawless frenzy were shooting down Czechs in the streets, while bombs from German planes rained down on the city.
