Thousands of Northern drinkers were facing a dry Christmas as 150 drivers and draymen from the brewery company Bass Charrington North had gone on a work-to-rule strike in support of a much-needed increase on their basic rate of £13 3s. In support of the pay claim strike pickets had been set up in Bradford, Tadcaster, Sheffield and Huddersfield. With many Northern breweries ready to deliver triple the amount usually ordered, for hundreds of public houses, clubs and hotels, it was very possible that the local could become a “pub with no beer.”
