The occasional pieces about Bradford skiffle bands of the late 1950s early 1960s that we’ve been running since August continue to attract interest.
Anne Bottomley, from Eccleshill, is the latest T&A reader to supply another bit of the missing jigsaw of the past, in the shape of a photograph of a five-piece group called The Sidewinders.
They used to play at the city-centre subterranean Students Club, now under the tarmac of Prince’s Way, where Anne liked to go on Friday and Saturday nights.
She said: “The Sidewinders wore black trousers and red shirts with black collars. I can only name two of them, David Ward and Dave Simpson – I think he was a journalist in Leeds.”
Unlike artist David Hockney and his brother John, who used to go to the club in the 1950s, Anne was not a student.
“I think more non-students than students went to the club,” she added.
