ILKLEY Lawn Tennis & Squash Club’s pre-Wimbledon tournament has a new name.

The fourth instalment of the Challenger, which is being held on June 16-24, will be known as the Fuzion 100 Ilkley Trophy.

The Fuzion 100 Trophy Series replaces long-standing British tennis backers Aegon, who sponsored the series for its first three years.

The grass-court tournaments, which are part of the preparation for the All-England Club, will incorporate not only 127,000 euros ATP Challenger Tour events at Surbiton (June 2-10), Manchester (June 10-17) and Ilkley, but $100,000 ITF Pro Circuit women’s events at Surbiton, Manchester, Ilkley and Southsea (June 26-29), which is at Portsmouth’s Canoe Lake Leisure.

The pre-Wimbledon Fuzion Series tournaments are, intriguingly, being called boutique and will complement the ATP World Tour events at London’s Queen’s Club (June 18-24), sponsored by Fever-Tree, and Eastbourne (June 25-July 1), sponsored by Nature Valley.

There are also WTA main tour events at Nottingham (June 11-17), Birmingham (June 18-24) and Eastbourne (June 24-30), all sponsored by Nature Valley.

Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, which was established in 1880, attracted worldwide praise when it first staged a pre-Wimbledon tournament in 2015 as players drank in the picturesque setting near the River Wharfe, Ilkley Moor and Cow and Calf rocks.

The tournament has also won the Sporting Highlight of the Year category at last year’s Provident Bradford Sports Awards.

The club uses 12 of its grass courts – enough to host a combined men’s and women’s event – and many of the 1800 club members offer a warm welcome in the shape of their volunteer work during the week.

Tickets for the Ilkley Challenger, which of course has men and women’s events, are £11.50, compared to £10.50 for Surbiton (men’s and women), £9.50 for Manchester (women’s tournament) and £6.50 for Southsea, which only has 16 players.

It is free to watch the two days of qualifying at Ilkley on June 16-17, and admission is £10 from Monday June 18-Thursday, June 21, with prices varying from £12.50 to £20 on Friday, June 22, £15 to £25 on Saturday, June 23, while tickets cost £25 for Sunday, June 24.

Tickets are available from www.lta.org.uk/major-events/fuzion-100-ilkley-trophy/tickets/.

Meanwhile, The Northern’s Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy has been voted the city’s event of the year, having progressed from a mere $50,000 ATP Challenger event in 2016.

The Fuzion 100 Southsea Trophy is part of a plan to safeguard the future of the Canoe Lake’s grass courts.
