Otley ultra runner Chris Carver contributed 143 miles as Great Britain’s men’s team finished seventh in the World 24-Hour Championship in Poland.
Carver finished 33rd overall after closing just short of his personal best (148 miles) in a race won by Mike Morton (USA) with 172 miles.
Michaela Dimitriadu (Czech Republic) clocked up 133 miles to finish as the leading women’s athlete at the Katowice venue.
Carver reflected: “I was very tired after the closing ceremony.
“I was third British man but I picked up three injuries on the same side, including a very bad big toenail at 17 hours when I was on target for 152 miles. My right foot did not stop bleeding until after the race.
“Oh yes, and a sprained ankle after 21 hours, when I was still hopeful of more than 149 miles. I couldn’t run much for the last three hours.”
Carver had set himself a target of running 150 miles – almost six marathons – in a single day.
It was the fifth time he had represented England or the UK in 24-hour races since 2006, when he first attempted the feat.
He had previously won gold and silver medals in the Commonwealth Championships and a bronze in the European Championships.
