Horsforth’s Tim Street grabbed victory at the weekend’s middle distance orienteering race at Calverley Woods.
He won by the clear margin of over two minutes from Baildon’s Steve Watkins on the longest course of the day, the 5.1km black course.
South Yorkshire’s Peter Tryner was third. Tryner took an early lead but, by the fourth control, Street had overhauled him and he never looked in danger for the rest of the race.
Another Airienteer, David Bowman of Horsforth, won the 4.4km brown course, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of Simon Martland of East Pennines with Dewsbury’s Andis Celinkis a further two minutes adrift in third.
Again Bowman took the lead from an early stage and, despite an error on the 20th control which saw his lead cut to a single second, he regained focus to stretch away from the rest of the field.
Adrian Pickles ensured that Airienteers took a clean sweep of the three longest courses on the 3.9km blue course. Another two-minute margin separated him from Peter Jones of Baildon, with South Yorkshire junior Katherine Hall in third place.
This course was decided in the final third of the race as Jones was leading for much of the race but Pickles showed strength and perseverance to come through in the end.
On the 3.4km green course, Mike Cox of Scholes claimed victory with yet another wide margin of nearly two minutes from Manchester’s Martin Green, with East Pennine’s Bryan Parkinson a further 38 seconds behind in third place.
Adam Smith of Meanwood won the 2.7km light green course with a margin of seven minutes between him and second-placed Hannah Goldswain of Pendle Forest, with Peter Branning a further two minutes behind.
On the yellow course, Lucia Doddy battled to a richly deserved second place behind Adam Thorpe of East Pennines.
