Ex-international runner Carl Thackeray won this year’s Apperley Bridge Canter, which attracted a record number of entries.

The Hallamshire Harrier crossed the line in 34min 44sec following a nip-and-tuck battle with Leeds City’s Greg Hull, which was only settled in the last few yards. Quentin Lewis, of Baildon Runners, was third.

The ladies race, which has been dominated by Pudsey Pacers runner Karen Pickles in recent years, saw Idle AC’s Donna Edmondson-Booker claim victory in 39:53, some way ahead of runner-up Emily Birchall of Leeds City.

Organising club Horsforth Harriers had several of their members running, with Rob Furness leading the way in 28th place.

Horsforth Harriers’ next race from Woodhouse Grove School is in September when they host the Horsforth 10K, the road race alternative to the trail-based Apperley Bridge Canter.
