Hector Haines, of Ilkley, has been selected for the Great Britain team to compete in the World Orienteering Championships in France in August.

An outstanding junior career with Airienteers has been followed by study at Edinburgh University, and many opportunities to compete on the testing Scottish moors and fells.

Hector has been a regular fixture in the British junior ranks.

Not to be outdone, his sister Florence Haines, a Year 12 pupil at Ilkley Grammar School, is one of 19 British junior orienteers selected to attend the British Talent Fulfilment Coaching Camp in Slovenia this July. This aims to help juniors make the transition from junior to senior international performance.

Florence is also in the British team at the European Youth Orienteering Championships in the Czech Republic next month.

A third local runner, 15-year-old Joe Woodley, in Year Ten at Guiseley School, has been selected by British Orienteering to attend a talent development coaching Ccamp in the Cairngorms, Scotland this July. Joe is currently in Italy at the World Schools Orienteering Championships and had a great result to come 11th in the opening race.

Meanwhile, the British Championships were held at Wharncliffe, north of Sheffield on physically-demanding and technical terrain. The leading results for Airienteers on the various age-group courses were achieved by: Hector Haines, 9th 14.3km course; Victoria Stevens, 10th, Robert Kelly 16th on 9.4km; Florence Haines 1st and Chloe Haines 13th on 7.2km; Daniel Bowman 11th, David Alcock 18th on 10.4km; Neil Conway 4th on 9.6km; Rose Burden 26th on 7.3km; Sophie Brown 9th, Ruth Ker 14th on 6.4km; Claire Towler 14th on 5.4km; Heather Phipps 11th, Eva Watson 13th on 4.6km; Steve Webb 19th on 9.2km; Andrew Kelly 15th on 8.8km; Peter Haines, 1st on 7.9km; Tony Carlyle 29th on 7.2km; Joe Woodley 6th on 7.0km; Beth Woodley 10th, Lindsay King 20th on 6.1km; Helen Wood 18th on 5.4km; Janet Leakes 21st on 4.6km; Jo Thornley 12th on 3.8km.
