Scottish vet Fiona Maxwell starred in the 57th Three Peaks Race, destroying the women’s over-50 course record.

Her Glaswegian club-mates had four of the top two dozen men and won the team prize.

The classic fell race draws runners from across the UK (and beyond), and this year they pulverised the Yorkshire contingent.

Pudsey & Bramley’s Graham Pearce in sixth (3hr 3min 16sec) and Bingley duo, Rob Jebb (16th) and Andrew Peace (20th), were the exceptions.

Pearce ran his fastest on the revised course, in operation since 2008. The 23.3mile unmarshalled route scales Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in turn, climbing 5,279ft in the process.

Shettleston’s Thomas Owens broke a club-mate’s 2008 course record by just five seconds, recording 2.53:4. Meanwhile, Jebb, the 2009 champion, was 23 minutes down on his winning time.

Anna Frost was first lady, in 3.30:00, four minutes ahead of Calder Valley’s Helen Fines. Maxwell defied her years in third (3.39:53).

Bingley’s Aly Raw ran well to be fifth lady home and first over-40 (3.44:25).

Local clubs were well represented in the 677 who made the various cut-offs to reach Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Chris Newman (49th, 3.32:54) was leading finisher for Wharfedale Harriers, just in front of Ilkley over-50 Ian Rowbotham (56th, 3.35:14), who was followed in by Skipton youngster, James Mountain (3.37:38) and a pair of Ilkley Harriers, Jamie Hutchinson and Dave Wilby, with team-mate Mark Mon-Williams in 64th. For Pudsey Pacers, James Clark (75th, 3.40:51) and Leanne Hague (4.39:15) led their men and women home.
