PUDSEY A are well clear at the top of Division Two of the Bradford Table Tennis League, but there is a battle royal for second place.

Highdale B, Unity A and Hermits C and D are all in with a shout, and Unity gave their hopes a boost with a fine win over Hermits C.

Shamir Bose took the opening set for Hermits against Dave Rawlins but from then on it was Unity all the way, with Steve Whitaker leading Unity to a 6-1 lead as he recorded a treble.

Jim Ferry had wins over Peter Holbrook and Maurice Biott, and Rawlins also beat Holbrook.

Bose managed another for Hermits but Unity were convincing 8-2 winners and are just five points behind Highdale B with a game in hand.

In Division Three, Unity B are stuck on the bottom rung but they were involved in a see-saw encounter with Hermits F.

Unity were hoping to repeat their victory from earlier in the season, and at the halfway stage were 3-2 up.

Peter Jackson enjoyed marathon wins over Chris Town and Paul Rook, and Bill Sugden also won two for Unity but David Campbell was the lynchpin for Hermits as he won all three.

Town and Rook both beat Michael Walker as Hermits led 5-4 but Walker and Sugden won the doubles for Unity to make it honours even.

Hermits G consolidated their position at the top with victory No 14 at fourth-placed Rastrick.

Hermits took the first three singles through Terry Halliday, Martin Jackson and Les Packer and, although Rastrick reduced the deficit to 4-3 with a brace from Brian Banks and a single from Mick Whitham, Hermits took the last three, with Packer unbeaten in a 7-3 success.
