The Bradford district was well represented at the ninth annual Aikido World Championships at Brunel University in London.

A strong team represented the British Aikido Association, with the Great Britain team becoming outright world champions for the first time.

Bradford members of the GB team are coached at Kirkstall Leisure centre in Leeds, the main West Yorkshire venue for aikido, under the supervision of Bob Jones (education advisor for Bradford Council) and team managers Mick Pratt and Danielle Jones (both from Bradford, who were also medal winners).

Bradford roll of honour at the championships: Laura Beardmore: women’s individual randori gold, team bronze, kongo gold; Danielle Jones: women’s team bronze, open kata silver; Sarah Fletcher: women’s team bronze; Lee Mazcs: men’s team gold, kongo gold; Jermaine Liburd: men’s team gold, kongo gold, men’s individual silver; Mick Pratt: kongo gold, open kata gold, dai san kata gold (Bradford); Simon Jones: open kata silver; Daniel White: basic kata gold (Bradford).
