No strangers to winning, Cleckheaton Shotokan Karate Club have achieved another first.

The town’s premier karate club have been presented with the gold standard under the English Shotokan Academy’s (ESA) club accreditation scheme.

They are the first Shotokan karate club in the mainstream martial arts world to achieve this prestigious award.

Club accreditation is part of the answer to the increasingly-complicated business of running an amateur sports club.

Karate England are working towards attaining Sport England-recognition as the National Governing Body (NGB) for traditional karate in the United Kingdom, and have now adopted the ESA Club Accreditation scheme, believing this to be the best in the country.

Cleckheaton’s senior instructor Mike Cowburn, a 5th Dan black belt, paid tribute to his fellow members for compiling the extensive details and attending the necessary training courses, but reaching the gold standard makes it all worthwhile.

The club accreditation scheme has transformed the way in which the club now operates, with the members enjoying the benefits.

Anyone wishing to join Cleckheaton Shotokan Kar-ate Club should contact Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre (01274-335130) for further details, or visit one of their classes on Mondays and Wednesdays (7.15pm).
