Bradford’s Phillip Bottomley hopes to take another step towards the London 2012 Paralympics this weekend.
The 51-year-old from Holme Wood is competing in a two-day Great Britain archery selection trial at Lilleshall prior to September’s European Championships in France.
Bottomley should be confident, having won his recurve category at the Arizona Cup in the United States earlier this summer.
That was an International Paralympic Committee ranking event.
Bottomley made his senior international debut for Great Britain last year in the World Championships in Nymburk, Czech Republic.
Kenny Allen was the other debutant, the remaining ten all having competed in the Beijing Paralympics, including Lothersdale’s Danielle Brown.
One reason for Bottomley being overlooked for so long was that he was ineligible for Britain due to him living in Holland and competing as part of their national squad.
He was asked to be part of the Dutch Paralympic team in 2002 but since 2008 has nailed his colours firmly to the British mast.
In 2005, he came eighth outdoors in the World Championships in Italy and in 2006 11th in the European Championships, both indoors and out.
Three years ago, Bottomley won an International Paralympic Committee event in Nymburk while still a member of the Dutch team.
Since switching allegiance, he came third at Stoke Mandeville last June and was part of the Great Britain team that won gold.
