Hipperholme & Lightcliffe School pupil Steven Scott demonstrated tremendous strength and stamina as he captured a bronze medal in his first event, the National Indoor Rowing Championships.

The 13-year-old competed in the Junior 14s event and recorded a personal best of 1,177 metres in four minutes in front of a packed crowd at the Manchester Velodrome last Sunday. Mum Christine was chuffed, saying: "We are extremely proud of Steven’s achievement - he has done fantastically well.

"Steven was delighted to finish third on his debut. He can’t wait to compete again.”

The teenager was introduced to the sport after his dad, former Bradford Salem rugby union player, Gary Scott, competed in the championships and bagged a silver.

Ever since then, both father and son have been involved in an intensive training schedule but the eight gruelling weeks have definitely paid off.

Christine added: “His dad has been there all the way, he has helped him train and prepare. The training regime was very intense and has been a success.”

Not only has the youngster been prospering in competition but also academically, and his school are very proud of his academic achievements.

“They offer a lot of support- his recent parents' evening was a huge success,” said Christine.

The next competition for the youngster is in November at the British Indoor Championships, which he will be preparing for 12 weeks prior to the event.

In the meantime, the competition between him and dad Gary is more than enough to keep him in shape. Christine said: "The competitiveness is clearly there, the two of them want to have the winning edge. It's often me who ends up in the middle of it - but it's healthy competition.”
