In many respects, Gary Scott is your average man, a father of four who holds down a 9-5 job and enjoys keeping fit.

But it was certainly no average achievement by the 47-year-old from Wyke when he finished second at the recent British Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham.

Former military man Scott marched his way to a fantastic time of 6min 19.8 sec over 2,000 metres.

The result was even more spectacular when you consider Gary has been battling cancer.

He was diagnosed two years ago and is currently in remission.

“I couldn’t believe it when I was told I had cancer. All I could think about were my kids, I just questioned what life was about,” said Scott.

“I had to beat it. Fortunately for me it was diagnosed early, before it had chance to spread.”

Despite the devastating news, he promised he would “live life to the full” and set his sights on a new challenge.

Scott embarked on a journey that would open his eyes to a new world of indoor rowing.

After taking part and winning a rowing tournament organised by the local gym, his fellow competitors urged him to consider competing at national level. “Apparently I achieved a good time,” he said.

“The others (gym partners) said I should try myself at the British Championships. Initially I was shocked that indoor rowing competitions actually existed. Without any delay I took it up.”

Following his success, Scott hopes to encourage his 13-year-old son to triumph at the National Junior Championships.

“I hope he can compete and do well, it would make me very proud,” said Scott, who is an inspiration to those facing serious setbacks.
