Ilkley Karate Club were in top form at the second Wharfedale Junior Grade Championships at Aireborough Leisure Centre in Guiseley, which attracted over 100 competitors, many of them novices, with clubs from Leeds, Yeadon, Guiseley, Horsforth and Skipton also being represented.
However, Ilkley were crowned overall champions after coming away with 27 trophies – 11 firsts, seven seconds and nine thirds.
Piers Walton, Abi Thackray, Peter Davison and adults Nikki Thackray and Mark Davison started the avalanche of gold awards in the kata (set moves).
This success was repeated in the fighting events with Alfie White, George Wareham (both seven), Thomas Hall and Sam Simons (11) and Josh Beattie (ten), plus adult Tom Styles.
Ilkley had a clean sweep of the final four places over their Leeds rivals in the boys’ red to orange belt 4ft to 4ft 4in kumite event.
George Wareham beat Finley Tunney in the final, bronzes going to Ryan Thatcher and Sam Barker.
