Four members of Bradford Fencing Club performed with credit at the Bay Open in Morecambe.
Peter Fletcher and Kat Robinson were trying to stab their way to victory in the mixed epee event, using the modern equivalent of the ancient duelling weapon.
Robinson did well in her maiden epee competition, finishing 21st against some experienced opponents, while Fletcher placed 18th in a group won by Cornish woman Katrina Smith.
Tim Noble, slashing with his sabre, managed sixth place in an event won by fellow Bradfordian Sam Crowther of Lancaster University.
Lloyd Thompson, taking part in only his fourth competition, thrust his way to tenth place in the foil section.
The Morecambe event is unusual in having mixed competition. Men and women regularly compete against each other in fencing clubs.
Bradford Fencing Club meet at Thornton Recreation Centre on Tuesday evenings and newcomers are welcome. The next beginners’ course starts next month and anyone interested should contact the centre.
