ONNA Ju-Jitsu Club have ended another very successful year on a high, with over 380 students attending their final grading of the year at the Khidmat Centre.

Of those, 70 students achieved junior white-belt status and 27 senior white-belt status, which reflects on both the club's popularity and their partnership work with West Yorkshire Sport, while three others achieved black-belt status.

Among the highlights were Senseis Eessa and Yoosuf Ghani, Maryam Khan, May Pickles and Eesa Yunis, who achieving Gold Tab 12 status, adding their names to the coveted club shield.

Senior club coach, Sensei Mumtaz Khan, was so impressed by Yoosuf's four-directional kata, which encompassed one-handed cartwheels, that she asked to see it again.

Also Sensei Khan delivered an inspirational presentation on her ju-jitsu journey, which was well received by students and parents alike.

Senseis Natalie Dowling, Adeeb Hussain and Tegan Johnson were the trio who got their black belts, which was a reward for their efforts, attitudes and teamwork.

A vast number of the women grading for the first time were members of the University of Bradford's self-defence sessions, delivered as part of a satellite project funded by Sport England.

Gold Tabs were won by Amaan Ahmed, Humayra Kauser and Hamza Saeed (Gold Tab One), Usmaan Iqbal, Hafsa Malik, Kashif Razzaq, Amaan Riaz, Aamnah Sultan and Zainab Sultan (Two), Ahmad Akhtar, Bethany Chadwick, Kishan Mistry and Abigail Moxon (Three), Hasan Hussain (Four), Hammad Aftab, Vedad Omerbegovic and Muaz Ahmed Qureshi (Five), Ifzah Ali, M Danyaal Hussain, M Zakawaan Hussain, Iqra Khan, Uzayr Khan and Ambia Shahzad (Six).

Gold Tab Seven winners were Amn Bashir, Idrees Haider, Shammas Hanif, Faisal Mahroof, Faizan Salim, Sulaimaan Salim, Ehsaan Shahzad, Oman Shahzad and Safa Zahid, while M Husnain Iqbal and Hamza Latif won at level nine, Alfie Conroy, M Abdullah Hakeem and Maleehah Hussain at level 11 and Eessa and Yoosuf Ghani, Maryam Khan, May Pickles and Eesa Yunis at level 12.

Junior black belts were Muhammad Bin Abdullah, Adam Ahmed, Afsana Ahmed, Amaan Ahmed, Isa Ahmed, Sami Ahmed, Ajeema Arobi, Faleeha Arobi, Zubair Elaswad, Aqsa Firdaus, Hassan Javed, Usman Javed, M Amad Khan, M Omair Khan, Ismaeel Khan, M Qasim Mahmood, Zoya Minhas, M Daanyaal Nawaz, Zain Qureshi, Mu' Tasim Rayyaan, Asiya Salim, Usman Salim, Umar Sarwar, Isra Shah, Fizaah Wazeer-Khailee, Imaani Zahid and Hafsah Zahoor.

Special thanks go to the coaching team and, in particular, Senseis Maryam Khan, Siraj Khan, Ismail Ghani and Ibrahim Yunis for volunteering as Uki for the senior black-belt gradings.

The club's next grading will be on Saturday, March 19, when Sport England's Mike Diaper will meet and greet students and members of the University Club.

The rise in demand has meant that both Senseis Adeeb Hiussain and Ismail Ghani will be running fresh sessions in the new year.

* Sensei's Eesa Yunis and Tegan Johnson have both been nominated for February's Bradford Active Awards.

Eesa has been nominated in the young male sportsman of the year category for his tireless coaching at Onna Ju-Jitsu Club and for winning gold medals at regional, national and international level.

It is hoped that he will be competing at the United Nations Ju-Jitsu World Congress Championships in Spain next year.

Tegan is the club's first female student to achieve Gold Tab 12 status, and achieved her senior black belt at just 16.

She has also won medals at both regional and national level, winning the club's first junior pairs demonstration under careful instruction from Sensei Hussain.

Meanwhile, Tegan continues to coaching new club members and hopes to run her own sessions when she is old enough.
