Bradford skater Harry Mattick retained his national title after clinching the gold medal at the British Ice Figure Skating Championships.

He was crowned British champion for the second year running with a score of 128.12 points in the junior men’s event at Sheffield.

And Daniel King completed an exceptional Bradford one-two as he finished a close second, taking silver with 122.32.

Mattick and King, who trains at iceSheffield, are both part of the National Ice Skating Association’s (NISA) performance team.

Mattick, who now skates out of Hull, represented Team GB at this year’s World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

NISA chief executive Keith Horton said: “It was an excellent championships. Many of the categories were the most competitive for a great number of years and it is very pleasing to see the young skaters progressing at championship level.”

The British Championships attracted skaters from all over the country and for the first time incorporated the Synchronised National Opens.

Horton said: “The Synchro element of the event went well, with all skaters enjoying themselves. With so many teams, there were interesting logistical challenges – particularly with the changing facilities – but the rink coped very well.”

At the event, NISA launched its Hall of Fame in recognition of all skaters who have won three or more British Championships during their skating careers.

It also screened the competition live on NISA TV and introduced technology allowing audiences to listen to the commentary.

Horton said: “More people than ever watched the Championships on NISA TV and the live commentary was extremely well received, particularly by the audience who listened on ear-piece radios. The technology worked well and was enjoyed by all spectators.”

As a national centre for excellence, iceSheffield is one of the best ice sports facilities in the UK, catering for both recreational and elite skaters.
