Joe Moses (Paul Milnes/Bradford Olympic RC) has made a cracking start to the National Trophy cyclo-cross season.

The Keighley junior won the first round at Temple Park Centre, South Shields, crossing the line 30 seconds clear of Adam Martin (Cestria Cycles).

Moses, 17, was part of a leading group which hit the front on the opening lap of a fast race, alongside Martin and Alex Welburn (Cycleshack-Forme Coaching), and by the end of the first lap they had a 15-second lead over the chasing pack, which was led by Joe Fox (Rapha Condor) and Harry Franklin (Hargroves Cycles).

But Moses was not content to have Martin stuck to him, and he attacked in the middle of the second lap. By the start of the third lap, he had nine seconds to spare over Martin and Welburn.

The chasing duo tried hard to stay with him but by lap four the gap had begun to grow again and Moses rode on to victory, with Welburn third, 37 seconds off the pace.

Moses said: “I got a good start and managed to keep moving up. Once I got to first, I put a bit of an effort in on the second lap.

“I built up a reasonable gap and built on that. It’s the first time I’ve ever been in the series leader’s jersey and I’m really happy about that. It was a great race but it was hard work in the wind.”

Keighley’s Chris Young (Wheelbase) took second place in the veterans’ over-40 race, finishing seven seconds behind Derbyshire’s Jim Bry-an (www.Zepnat.com RT/Kuita/GSG).

Fifth spot went to Oxen-hope’s Matt Denby (Zepnat RT), who battled well after a slowish start to finish 1min 9sec adrift.

Former Otley resident Adela Carter (WXC MTB) won the women’s race by 12 seconds from long-time race leader Corrine Hall (Team Corridori).
