East Bradford Cycling Club have set the wheels in motion for future success after four of their riders picked up bronze medals at the World Mountain Bike Cup at Dalby last month.

Jennie Roberts, ten, Joe Parker, 12, and 11-year-olds Tom Wilson and Euan Cameron, both from Bradford, competed in the under-14s relay race, just missing out on second place after a sprint finish.

Their third place adds to the top spot that two of the quartet earned in the Tour of Britain race in York two years ago, when they became the fastest in the country in their age group.

Coach Mandy Parker said the club’s change of ethos has been the key to their recent triumphs.

“We changed the structure of the club three or four years ago. The coaches have all taken specific qualifications and we’re now seeing the fruits of that.

“We’re starting to see real success. The coaching is vital to get the kids enthused and encourage them to develop their skills. The want to work hard and it shows in the results.

“We’re achieving more success as we work harder at it.

“It was a tough course at Dalby, more than a BMX course really. It’s actually part of the World Cup course, so it was a high standard.”

The club, which starts training youngsters from the age of three, has been in existence for over 100 years and is based at Richard Dunne Sports Centre in Odsal.

Parker is enthusiastic about the prospects of the four medallists, and sees plenty of potential for the future.

She said: “Euan and Tom in particular are certainly both very talented. Euan trains at Richard Dunne even when we’re not there, and Tom regularly road rides with his grandad, so they’re both really dedicated.

“We also have a 16-year-old called Jack Duffy who’s just become White Rose Boys under-16s champion, which is a fantastic achievement.

“Some of the kids are about to take part in the Go Ride sessions at the Velodrome in Manchester at the National Cycling Centre, which will be a great experience for them.”
