Upper Bolton Cons A edged a nailbiting snooker final against Northcote Cons to win the HEY’S TROPHY at Undercliffe Cricket Club.

Phil Frith started with 66-39 and 56-42 victories for Upper Bolton against Andy Robbins but Mark Cunningham of Northcote hit back with interest.

He logged an overall 51-point win against Upper Bolton opponent Brian McDonald, with 57-41 and 61-26 frame verdicts earning his side a ten-point lead at the interval.

Upper Bolton duo Colin Harrison and Stuart Ellis started impressively in their opening frames, Harrison winning 64-32 against Tony King and Ellis earning a 75-56 success over Anthony Borza.

This secured a 41-point cushion going into the final two frames – but Northcote were not about to give up without a scrap.

King produced an excellent 46-point victory over Harrison, the 80-34 tally leaving his side ahead and meaning Ellis now had to defeat Borza by more than five points.

There was plenty of tension in the room and this rubbed off on the two players, who battled for every ball.

Incredibly, the match was to go down to the final black and although Ellis led 46-34, the seven points for Borza would level matters and mean a respot for the title, as happened in the Hopkinson Plate final the previous week.

After a few safety exchanges, Ellis emerged as the hero for Upper Bolton by potting a difficult black to seal the title.

* The dates for the MOORHOUSE SHIELD semi-finals have been moved back a week to enable second legs to be completed in the last eight following an administration error.

This now means that first-leg matches will be played on June 9, with the returns taking place the following Thursday.

The final is provisionally scheduled for Thursday, June 23 and will be inked in once the finalists are known.
