In what was a must-win match for both sides, Clayton A recorded a fantastic 18-12 away win at Asa Briggs A in the Naylor League.

The result leaves Asa Briggs at the bottom of the table, still without a win this season.

Malcolm Iles was again in terrific form with a 21-8 win but Paul Kaye (21-8) and Tommy Harney (21-9) responded to keep Clayton's hopes of staying up alive.

Mick Walsh (21-8) helped Crossroads to a 20-10 victory over Pudsey Britannia A, a result which moves them to the top of the table.

Spen Victoria A maintained their 100 per cent record in the Godwin League with a 21-9 away win at Heckmondwike, with Pete Jagger (21-6) the pick of seven away winners.

Derek Goor will surely be pushing for a place in Spen's A team after another great performance. His 21-8 victory was not enough though as Eccleshill B scraped a 16-14 away win, thanks to Helen Gilroy 21-10. Brighouse Sports B managed eight home winners over Rufford A in their 21-9 home success.

Les Ward (21-5) starred as Peel A won 18-12 at home to Low Moor Harold in the Observer League, while Gary Wike (21-9) and Andy Wood (21-8) helped Horsforth Woodside A to a 26-4 victory over Tyersal A. John Preston (21-1) and Tony Farrar (21-8) helped Salts A to a 21-9 win over Royd House A, who had Cliff White (21-6) and Debbie Hosty (21-8) in good form.

Wibsey A beat leaders Pudsey Littlemoor B 17-13, despite a great 21-9 win from Mick Gadd, while Knowles A and Queenbsury A shared the points, the latter edging it on aggregate 173-172.

Lister A found it tough going in the Bartle League as they went down 30-0 at Bowling A. Andrew Dennison (21-1), Steve Riddell (21-3) and Daran Rees (21-4) were all in superb form.

Alan Jessop (21-6) ensured Pudsey B were 18-12 winners over Crowghyll A, while captain Keith Murgatroyd (21-4) and Andy Smith (21-6) helped Drighlington A to a convincing 25-5 home win over Stanningley. Oakenshaw A edged home 16-14 at home to Greengates, Marlene Hughes winning 21-6.

Bradford Moor A went down 19-11 at Horton A in the Haigh League. Joyce Appleton (21-7) was the best of the seven home winners.

Roy Carter (21-4) and Geoff Deaville (21-5) helped BBA thump Asa Briggs B 26-4 and Rufford B beat Spen Ex-Service 21-9, thanks to John Arundel's 21-6. Pudsey Brit B remain top after a 20-10 home success over Eccleshill C, Norman Dewhirst (21-6) and Ann Bell (21-3) in great form.

Pudsey C are proving tough to beat at home in the Riley League, as Drighlington B found out, going down 26-4, with Sue Chadwick and Stan Best both winning 21-6. Con Fitzgerald was another 21-6 winner for Queensbury B in their 23-7 win over Peel B. Knowles B were 29-1 losers at Armley Cons, who had David Birks (21-1), Nigel Partington (21-3) and Adrian Binks (21-5) in top form. Christine Bartle (21-5) helped Cleckheaton Sports to a 20-10 win over West Bradford A. Eight winners for Harold Park ensured a 25-5 home win.

Salts B won their first game of the season in the Field Packaging League with an 18-12 away victory at Guiseley B, Brian Wright (21-7) in form.

Dale Dyson's 21-3 was not enough for Bailiff Bridge A as they went down 17-13 at home to Horton B. Ashley Southwell continues to improve as he won 21-6 at Crowghll B but still found himself on the losing team, as Crowghyll won 21-9 thank to seven home winners.

Shelf A managed nine winners at Lister B on their way to a 26-4 away victory. while Cyril Dalby (21-3) was the star for Birkenshaw in their 26-4 home win over Horsforth Woodside B.

Peel C were 17-13 winners at Tyersal B in the Mellor League, thanks to Maureen Watmuff and Melvyn Hall both carding 21-8s. Alice Murtagh (21-8) was the star as Bowling B won 18-12 at Bradford Moor B while Shelf B managed six winners to take a share of the points against Oakenshaw B.

West Royd extended their lead at the top of the Moorhouse League with a 25-5 win at Bowling C, Eddie Stead (21-1) and Paul Bradley (21-3) leading the way. Queensbury C carded all ten winners in their 29-1 demolition of Lister C - Brian Rastrick (21-3) and Barbara Venohr (21-5) starring - and Wibsey D won 16-14 at Peel D in a low-scoring game.

  • Former Yorkshire County bowler Alan Thompson of Mirfield and recent New Street Open winner Craig Hopwood both qualified for the final of the Bill Carter Memorial Tournament, to be held on August 20.
Thompson beat Paul Bailey (Birmingham) in the final qualifying round, edging home 21-20 after being 7-1 down. He had earlier beaten Vince Senior (Sheffield) 21-8 and Colin Lane (Middles-brough) 21-15.

Hopwood received a first-round bye and then beat Dave Jackson (Altrincham) 21-8 and Rob Thompson (Sheffield) 21-13 in the qualifying competition at Sowerby Tennis and Bowling Club.

  • Yorkshire beat North Derbyshire 21-10 in the County Championship on Sunday. In the home leg at Pudsey Littlemoor, ten winners ensured Yorkshire won 12-2 with an 83-point advantage. Yorkshire were relying on South Yorkshire beating East Midlands to qualify but East Midlands produced a shock 20-11 win and knocked Yorkshire out of this year's competition.
  • The Howarth and Supplementary Cups, sponsored by Sharpes Estate Agents, reach the semi-final stages tomorrow, with Eccleshill (Scr) taking on Clayton (35) at Greengates in the Howarth Cup. Asa Briggs B (55) take on Bowling (60) at Knowles, with Bowling having a five start. In the Supplementary Cup, Greengates (50) play Wyke (60) at Asa Briggs and Brackenhill (60) play Bradford Moor (50) at Clayton.
  • Bradford defend their Crown Green Inter-District title at Bridlington on Sunday.
  • Shipley Club were winners of the Marie Ogden Pairs title for the fifth successive year on Sunday, beating Wharfemeadows from Otley 3-2 at Greenbottom.
Wharfemeadows got off to the perfect start as they eased into a 2-0 lead with Chris Lodge and Dave Rankin leading the way. It was certainly a game of two halves, as Shipley recovered to lift the title, with their big guns doing the damage.

Wharfemeadows could only muster 18 points between the last three pairs - Gordon Preston and Dave Lowe (21-5) leading the way for Shipley.
